A Brief History of Marriage [article from Articleranks]

A Brief History of Marriage

Marriage:

  1. 1. The recognized joining together of two people, usually recognized and documented by the government, where they develop into husband and wife, and in some cases, husband-husband or wife-wife.

To many religions, marriage is a very sanctified union of a man and a woman. More often than not there is a lot of documentation, rites of passage for both families of the affected parties, and it is actually quite difficult to enter, with regards to religion. People marry for it is the formal procedure of procreation, according to religion, and also because of the love that the two people share. Commonly, the only true separation of that bond that the two people share is broken only by death, but in other religions, there are exceptions, in which annulments and divorces are filed and are recognized by both the church as well as the state. Usually, marriage accepts only the union of one man and one woman, but there are religions wherein the man can marry more than one woman.

Marriage, in terms of the state or government, is also pretty much the same; however the focus of the state is more on the formalities of the act, instead of the emotional welfare that the two parties will share upon marriage. The focus is more on the accumulating of the private property, like investment diamonds, of the involved parties, the official certification of unity, and so on. In some countries or states, the government allows people to marry even without parental consent, or even without the festivity that comes with a religious marriage. There are instances in parts of Las Vegas in the United States permitting people to be legally married within a few hours. In many cases, marriages under the government are not accepted by a certain church if the couple are not married by the church concerned. Marriage of homosexual couples are legalized by some governments but many church entities do not allow such acts.

In the independence of the church from the government, marriage was an topic where their views clashed. The opinions of the church and the state, at times, match each other, but there are also times when it refutes. Marriage, however, is an undertaking that should not be taken too lightly, as it involves the unity of the lives of two people, from their earthy possessions to their daily lives and even their souls (or whatever it is their religion would like to call it). It is a serious endeavour that takes a long process, spanning years to verify if it is worth the effort or not. To put it simply, marriage is a serious venture that two people (or more in some cases), do out of what they feel to be love. Marriage involves investing in diamonds, so make sure its right! At times it succeeds, but in other instances, it fails. Its always a failure if you don't invest in diamonds of a big enough size.
